The Strange But True Story of How Garlic Fingers Became An East Coast Thing

What are garlic fingers?

What is the origin of garlic fingers?

Garlic fingers are a type of pizza that originated from the East Coast of America. It was popularized by Domino’s in the 1990s and has since become a well-known dish.

The name “garlic fingers” is derived from the shape of this pizza. It consists of a crust with a garlic and cheese base, topped with mozzarella cheese, meatballs, pepperoni, and marinara sauce. The crust is then cut into strips so that each piece looks like a finger.

The Interesting Origin Story Behind the Disgusting Name

I am a student of the food sciences, and I’m writing a paper on the origin of garlic fingers.

Garlic fingers are made of pizza dough, garlic and mozzarella cheese with crispy, golden-brown fried sausage on top. I had never tasted it before so I went to the lab to make some. It turns out that they’re really good!

I interviewed people from many different towns in the Eastern Coast and asked them about their favorite dish. The one that seemed to most popular is what some people call “chicken fingers” or “sausage fries“. They were made with flattened chicken or sausage covered in seasoning and fried until crispy then coated in melted mozzarella cheese and served with pizza sauce on top.

The history of garlic fingers is unknown, but a team of food scientists from NASA thinks that it was created by accident when one day a cook accidentally dropped some mozzarella cheese into the fryer

Quick Trivia!

In the late 1800’s, Louie Sinatra, a Sicilian immigrant with a passion for garlic and mutton found success in selling his homemade garlic fingers to working-class families. At some point, the dish became associated with towns on the eastern coast of America.

Brave New York Times reporter Sophia Sinatra is tasked by her editor to find out the truth about the origins of garlic fingers. It soon becomes clear that Louie’s true intentions were not to sell his garlic fingers but to create a dish that would be as uniquely American as he was. When Sophia discovers that Louie originally called his creation “Garlic Fingers” instead of “Garlic Pizza,” she finally figures out what she has been searching for all along: why New Yorkers have such an odd relationship with this dish.
